Courses & Assessments

Courses

COURSES allow content creators to assemble important and relevant published content for building class instances and distributing them to groups of learners. Courses are arranged using the Component Tree, similar to books, with modules and nested course content.

This section describes what course types are available (self-directed vs instructor-led) and their differences, what assessment types exist and what they’re for, and how to link assessments to courses. An explanation of how to build Courses, modules, and components can be found here.

Configuring Instructor-Led vs. Self-Directed Courses

Before a course can be published, the author needs to indicate when the course is Instructor-Led or Self-Directed. This can be configured in the Builder. Click the “Settings” button at the bottom right of the builder, and an interface will open allowing you to choose the delivery type for the course.

  • An Instructor-Led course requires an instructor or trainer to create class instances, distribute registration codes, and certify students. The instructor has discretion for giving credit to students. Instructor-led courses also contain the option to include Learner Evaluations (Performance Assessment Checklists), which are not available in self-directed courses.

  • A Self-Directed course does not have an instructor or trainer. A learner can register at any time without the need for a registration code and will receive a certificate upon either completing the course content or passing the assessment (if available).

For either delivery type, there is an option requiring students to read and view course content in order. This is the default setting under Enforced Sequence. To allow students to work in whatever order they choose, simply unclick the check box next to “Require learners proceed in order.”

Credit Hours can also be assigned to the course by entering a numerical value in the text box underneath Credit Hours. These hours will be granted to the learner upon completion of the course.

Assessments

The main difference between courses and books is the assessments. This section will go over the following types of optional assessments as they are used in courses: Module Quiz, Branching Scenario, and Final Assessments. It will also explain Learner Evaluations (instructor-led only) and Course Surveys, both of which are optional.

Module Quiz

The module quiz is an optional component that allows users to create knowledge quizzes within a module to test comprehension. After choosing Module Quiz in the component popup menu, the right side of the menu will allow you to include an optional estimated completion time. To populate your module quiz, click on the “Open Assessment Builder,” which will take you to the assessment builder and allow you to start creating questions.

Once in the assessment builder, you can create as many questions as you’d like. Currently, Capillary only supports true/false and multiple choice questions-types. For more on building questions in the assessment builder, click here.

Branching Scenarios Quiz

The Scenario Quiz component allows users to link branching scenario assessments within a module to test comprehension. After choosing Scenario Quiz in the component popup menu, the resulting popup will list all of the published Branching Scenario Assessments you have access to. To link a Branching Scenario to the Scenario Quiz component, simply click the link icon to the right of the Branching Scenario Assessment you wish to connect.

NOTE: You can only link one Branching Scenario Assessment to each Scenario Quiz component. You can add however many Scenario Quizzes as you’d like to any module, but each must be a new Scenario Quiz component with a single linked Branching Scenario Assessment.

Final Assessments

Final assessments allow content creators to build final assessments to attach to the end of a course to test learners' comprehension of the content within the course. There are two types of assessments: static form and question bank. Static form assessments are single, static assessments attached only to the course being built. Users will see the same questions in the same order each time. Question bank assessments allow you to choose a desired number of questions from multiple published question banks. Each iteration of a question bank assessment will pull the number of selected questions from each bank and randomize them.

To create an assessment, click on the “Choose a Final Assessment type” dropdown located under the module component tree and select Question Bank Assessment or Static Form Assessment. Whichever you select will allow you to set a minimum percentage passing threshold and take you to the Final Assessment Builder.

To set a minimum percentage passing threshold, use the editor-box provided to type or paste in a number between 0-100. To head to the Final Assessment Builder, click on the ”Open Final Assessment” Builder button at the bottom.

Final Assessment Builder

The Final Assessment Builder allows you to build your assessment by either creating a static form assessment or linking questions from questions banks.

Static Form Assessments (Classic)

To create a new question, click the “+ New Question” button at the top right. This will open a popup menu that allows you to choose the type of question to create.

Below are the two question-types possible within an assessment:

True/False

The True/False question-type allows you to ask a learner a simple true or false question. After choosing True/False in the question popup window, the right side of the menu will display the True/False Editing Area, allowing you to create your question and select the correct response.

To create your question, type or paste the question’s text into the text-editor box under the Question section in the True/False Editing Area. To set the question’s answer, click on the checkbox that corresponds to the correct answer under the Correct Response column in the True/False Options section.

Optional features for this question type are a rationale, which can be included using the text box at the bottom of the page, or an attached media asset. These assets (image, video, and audio) can be selected from the Attached Media Asset section underneath the question. Only one media asset can be attached per question, and the attachment can be simply removed with the “x Remove” button.

Multiple Choice

The Multiple Choice question-type allows you to ask a learner a simple multiple-choice question. After choosing Multiple Choice in the question popup window, the right side of the menu will display the Multiple Choice Editing Area, allowing you to create your question, edit the available answer choices, and select the correct answer.

To create your question, type or paste the question’s text into the text-editor box under the Question section in the Multiple Choice Editing Area.

To create your list of answer-choices and select the correct answer, navigate to the Multiple Choice section, which consists of three columns: Correct, Answers, and Delete.

  • Correct consists of checkboxes used to select the correct response. Click the checkbox next to the corresponding answer to set the correct response.

  • Answers corresponds to the answer-choices visible to the learner. To edit, simply type or paste in the desired text in the text editor box provided. Rationale allows you to add response rationale to each answer-choice by entering an explanation into the text box below each answer choice. This is entirely optional.

  • Delete allows you to remove an option from the group of answer choices.

To add more options to your group of answer-choices, click on the “+ Add option” button at the bottom left of the Multiple Choice Configurations section.

The order of the questions can re-arranged using the hamburger icon (two grey lines) to the left of the question title. Simply click that icon and drag the question either up or down to the desired location among the other questions.

An optional feature for this question type is the attached media asset. These assets (image, video, and audio) can be selected from the Attached Media Asset section underneath the question. Only one media asset can be attached per question, and the attachment can be simply removed with the “x Remove” button.

Question Bank Assessments (Recommended)

Question bank assessments are recommended over static form assessments. This is because question bank assessments allow you to choose a desired number of questions from multiple published question banks, which are then compiled and randomized each time, increasing the rigor of the exam and reducing the likelihood of cheating between learners.

To create a question bank assessment, you must link the desired number of questions from the available, published question banks. To start linking question banks, while in the assessment builder, click on the “Link Question Bank” button near the top right. In the resulting popup window, find the question banks you’d like to link, select the desired number of questions you’d like pulled, and click on the blue link icon to link those questions to your assessment. You can link as many questions from as many question banks as you’d like.

Once you’re finished linking, click the X at the top right of the popup to return to the assessment builder. If you’d like to unlink a question bank from the assessment, click the red unlink icon in the Unlink column. To edit the number of questions in a linked question bank, simply change the value in the Questions column to whatever is desired using the up/down arrows or highlighting and typing in the number.

Once you’re satisfied with your question bank assessment, you may return to the course builder to finish building and publishing your course.

Deleting a Final Assessment

To delete a final assessment, click the three-dot icon on the right side of the Final Assessment bar, and then select “Delete final assessment.” A pop-up will open warning you that removing the final assessment will also delete all questions created for the final assessment as well as the passing threshold value. Deleting the final assessment requires manually typing the word DELETE into the text area and clicking the “Delete Final Assessment” button.

Deleting a final assessment allows you to create a new final assessment or change from one final assessment type to the other.

Learner Badges

Learner Badges function as a gamified achievement and can only be added to Final Assessments. These badges can be added to either final assessment type before opening the Final Assessment Builder.

To add a learner badge to the final assessment, Click “Add Learner Badge” to open a pop-up interface, which allows you to either create a new badge or select from existing badges. Creating a new badge requires you to name the achievement and provide a description of the badge as well as the criteria for its achievement. You can then select and upload an image file from your computer, caption the image, and designate an author. If the badge has already been created in Badge Management, simply click the “Select existing badge” tab to search for and retrieve an existing badge.

Learner Evaluations

Learner evaluations can only be attached to instructor-led courses. To link a performance assessment to a course, navigate to the bottom of the course Builder tab, click “Enable Learner Evaluations,” and add an optional title for the evaluation. Then, click the “+ Add Performance Assessments” button in the Editing Area. The resulting popup window will display all of the published performance assessments you have access to. Click the link icon to the right of the desired performance assessment(s) to attach them.

NOTE: You can attach up to 40 published performance assessments to each course if desired.

To remove a performance assessment, simply click the broken link icon to the right of the assessment, under the “Remove” column.

Survey Forms

Content Creators can add an end of course questionnaire, referred to as Survey Form. Survey Forms can only be attached to instructor-led courses and provide a mechanism to collect feedback from class students.

To access a survey form, click on the Survey Form option under the Assessment section of the left-hand-side navigation menu. This action will allow you to see and access all the existing survey forms. From this view, you can create a new survey form by selecting the Create Survey Form on the upper right of the screen.

To link a survey form to a course, navigate to the bottom of the course Builder tab, click “Select Course Survey”. The resulting popup window will display all of the published survey forms you have access to. Click the link icon to the right of the desired survey form to attach them.

To remove a survey form, simply click the ellipsis menu to the right of the survey form, and click on “Remove Course Survey”.

After your course and assessment are built and published, instructor teams can create class instances and distribute them to groups of learners. To learn more about creating and managing class instances, head to the Instructor Functions tutorial.
