Courses

COURSES allow content creators to assemble important and relevant published content for building class instances and distributing them to groups of learners. Courses are arranged using the Component Tree, similar to books, with modules and nested course content.

To create a course, navigate to the Course section under Content Publishing in the lefthand navigation menu, then click the “Create Course” button at the top right. In the resulting popup menu, name your course, designate an author, and click Create Course. This will bring you to the Details section of your course and allow you to start building your course content.

Note: This tutorial specifically refers to the Builder section of the Publishing Wizard. Detailed instructions on Details, Categories, Collection, and Publish tabs of the Publishing Wizard can be found here.

The Details section allows you to create an icon for the course and provide a description of the course’s contents. To create an icon, click the camera button outlined in blue, then click “edit”, and follow the steps to upload and crop an image.

To begin creating your course’s content, click on the Builder tab of the Publishing Wizard near the top.

Note: Courses offer several assessment types. For documentation on assessments, click here.

Settings

Before you start building, it’s important to pick your course’s settings. Click the Settings button at the bottom right of the Course Outline section (will be red until your settings are selected) to open the Course Configurations window. Here you can choose your delivery type (self-directed or instructor-led), whether to enforce the course sequence or not (if selected, users will have to finish the modules consecutively, with each module inaccessible until the previous module has been completed), and add credit hours to the course.

  • Instructor-led: Course content must be instantiated by an instructor, with a unique registration code provided for access.

  • Self-directed: One instance of the course material where every learner can register on their own without the need for an instructor to provide a registration code

Course Outline

The top section of any course contains an optional Course Outline editor component. This acts as the course syllabus. When a learner enters a course, there will be a “View Syllabus” button at the top, which corresponds to the text entered into the Course Outline editor component when building the course.

Creating a New Module

To create a new module, click the “+ Add Module” button near the bottom left and name the module. Clicking the chevron to the left of the name of the module will display the contents within the module and allow you to add new components or preview the module’s content. Clicking the chevron again will collapse the section.

Creating a New Component

To add a new component to a section, make sure the section is open (chevron will be pointing down), and click the “+ New Component” button underneath the section’s name. This will open a popup menu that allows you to choose the type of component to create.

Below are the 7 component-types possible within a course:

Editor

The editor component consists of a simple WYSIWYG rich-text editor, which allows you to create text-based content. After choosing Editor in the component popup menu, the right side of the menu will display the text editor. This editor box allows you to type or paste in any text-based content and format it using the text markup buttons on top of the editor box.

Note: The editor component does not offer a code-based version of the text editor or accept any code strings for additional markup.

Audio

The audio component allows an audio file to be embedded within a module of a course. After choosing Audio in the component popup menu, the right side of the menu will display the Audio Details section, allowing you to label and select/upload the audio file.

To select/upload the audio file, click the “Select audio asset” button. The resulting popup menu allows you to select an existing media asset or upload a new media asset.

To select an existing media asset, either scroll through the available media or use the search bar at the top right to find the desired media asset, click on the media asset (this will display a preview, the label, and some metadata), and click the “Use selected media” button at the bottom right.

To upload a new media asset, click the “Upload a new audio” tab at the top right of the popup menu. First, label the audio file (this will be the name of the audio file in your media assets database). Then, select the desired file from your computer. Once the file has successfully loaded, click the “Create new audio asset” button at the bottom right.

Image

The image component allows an image file to be embedded within a module of a course. After choosing Image in the component popup menu, the right side of the menu will display the Image Details section, allowing you to label and select/upload the image.

To select/upload the image, click the “Select image asset” button. The resulting popup menu allows you to select an existing media asset or upload a new media asset.

Module Quiz

Module quizzes provide a perfect opportunity for learners to test their comprehension with true/false and multiple-choice questions. Module quizzes are ungraded and untracked. After completion, users will be able to review their answers to see what they got right or wrong, what the correct answer is, and any response rationale you include.

For more on building module quizzes, navigate to the Courses & Assessments section.

Scenario Quiz

Scenario quizzes are branching scenarios that allow content creators to ask follow-up questions to coach the learner toward the optimal answer path. Scenario quizzes are ungraded and untracked. Scenario quizzes are built outside of the course builder and linked to courses as a component.

To link a branching scenario, choose “Scenario Quiz” as the component. The resulting popup window will display all of the published branching scenario quizzes for the collection. Click the link icon to the right of the scenario quiz you wish to link. Only one branching scenario can be linked to each Scenario Quiz component.

For more on building scenario quizzes, navigate to the Courses & Assessments section.

Assignment

Assignments in a course serve as a way for learners to apply their knowledge and skills. They are tasks, projects, or assessments completed by learners and submitted for feedback. These assignments may include standard forms, like the DD1380, which can be completed on the learners' device.

To create an assignment, select the Assignment component. The system will display an editing area for the assignment where you must enter the title and description for the assignment. Attaching the assignment file is done by selecting the PDF option at the bottom of the screen. The resulting popup window will display all available PDF files and an option to upload new PDF assets.

To upload a new PDF asset, click the “Upload a new PDF” tab at the top right of the popup menu. First, label the video (this will be the name of the video in your media assets database). Then, select the desired file from your computer. Once the file has successfully loaded, click the “Create new PDF asset” button at the bottom right.

Previewing Modules

Each module is available for preview before publishing. To preview a module, open the module by clicking the arrow left of the module name, then click the “Preview Section” button. This will result in a popup window displaying the module’s contents as they would appear on a phone, tablet, and landscape (pc or other larger screens).

You can also preview the module’s content by clicking on the module’s name, which will display the module’s content in the Editing Area to the right.

Rearranging the Order of Modules and Components

Courses allow you to rearrange your content however you’d like using the drag-and-drop method.

Rearranging Modules

To rearrange sections, you must first collapse all sections by clicking the arrows left of the section’s name. When all sections are collapsed, click on the rearrange icon (six squares in two columns) left of the section name and drag it up or down to its desired position. If a section is open, the rearrange icon turns into a lock, indicating that section positions are locked and cannot be rearranged until all sections are collapsed.

Rearranging Components

To rearrange components, you must first collapse all components within the same nested group by clicking the arrows left of the component name until the lock left of the component name turns into a rearrange icon (six squares). When the appropriate components are collapsed, click on rearrange icon and drag it up or down to its desired position.
